Frequently asked questions

How are the olives smoked?

Cold smoked using New Zealand manuka woodchip, then vacuum packed with premium olive oil. The vacuum sealing is what drives the flavour in - the smoke and oil are pressed into the olive flesh rather than just sitting on the surface, which is why the flavour carries all the way through.

What do the Manuka Smoked Olives taste like?

Rich and meaty, with a warm, aromatic smokiness layered through. The manuka smoke is lighter than you'd expect - not like a BBQ, more like something you'd find in a high-end deli. Reviewers consistently describe them as unlike any olive they've tried before.

What do you serve Manuka Smoked Olives with?

They're built for a cheese board or grazing platter - the smokiness pairs well with aged cheddar, gouda, or anything sharp. Also good alongside charcuterie, crusty bread, or as a standalone pre-dinner snack. The infused olive oil left in the pack is worth pouring over goat's cheese or sourdough.

What’s the difference between Kalamata and green olives?

Kalamatas are a Greek variety - dark purple, meaty, with a rich, slightly tangy flavour. Green olives are harvested earlier and tend to be firmer and more mild. Both are cold smoked with NZ manuka woodchip, so you get that same signature smokiness either way. It mostly comes down to personal preference - or just get both.

Is the smoke artificial?

Never. Our olives are cold smoked with real New Zealand manuka woodchip. No liquid smoke, no flavouring, no shortcuts. The flavour comes from the process, not a bottle.

How much olive do I actually get?

Each jar is 2kg - the drained weight (the olives themselves, without brine) is approximately 1kg. It’s a big jar. You’ll know it when you see it.

Why are these olives pitted?

Our classic range keeps the pit in - as nature intended, it holds the flavour. These ones are pitted for a reason: they’re built for recipes, entertaining, and cocktails where you want to grab and go. No prep, no pits, straight into the pan, the salad, or the martini glass.

What does “in brine” mean - and why is it different to your other olives?

Our usual range is marinated in premium olive oil - smooth, rich, and with that infused oil left in the pouch that’s just as good as the olives. These are packed in brine, which is the traditional format for bulk olives and makes them ideal for cooking and salads. The brine itself takes on that Manuka smokiness too, which makes it a seriously good addition to a dirty martini.
